Foil
She always was my opposite:
Attracting me with shine,
Her traits, her habits were all quite
Different from mine.
Losing her made of me a summer without sun–
Now round and round my finger I turn
A little piece of foil,
With bittersweet laugh I gently spurn
The pun my grief bespoils.
And in my heart the surface bubbles and boils and churns–
My makeshift ring was carefully
Fashioned from a kiss,
From chocolate given earnestly
To promise gone amiss.
But I remember singing songs with optimism fresh–
Pursuing folly or honor,
We seldom looked around.
There was no other place on earth
There was no other sound.
So all the others that we loved saw both of us aloof–
Then here I was, twirling a piece
Of makeshift jewelry,
And wishing for love or God or peace
Instead of ambiguity–
The ring was clear, but we were not, and I was losing sleep–
And still I sit and think about
Her calm “yin to my yang”,
How she could listen to my doubts
While faith she surely sang,
My faith may be, but she is gone, and all I have is one foil ring.
