It’s only this

· poem

It’s only this:

I can’t let go

Of something I never knew the light of.

I can’t unknow

A life of glowing sunlight upon no face.

I can’t be hurt

By the tugging feelings of an unknown surrounding.

I can’t be cut by the edge of the shell

If I remain curled deep inside.

And sometimes that’s just where I’d rather be,

Even if it means floating across a sea of numbness

Away from your tender touch.

Even if it means

Rolling through dusty fields

Once luscious with life.

Even if it means

Your voice grows hoarse from calling my name,

I can’t respond.

I know that maybe, someday,

You’ll stop calling and then I won’t hurt so

For turning from your glow.
